Solar activity reached high levels due to an impulsive M7.2 flare at 03/1045 UTC as detected by the GOES-18 satellite. Eight sunspot groups were present on the visible solar disk, and background X-ray flux continued at low C-class levels. Region 3293 (N13E35; Dhc/beta-delta) produced a series of M-class (R1-R2; Minor-Moderate) flares beginning at 03/0927 UTC, with the last M-flare at 03/1350 UTC. The strongest flare during this increased activity was the aforementioned M7 flare. The flare activity coincided with increased magnetic shear development and flux transport in the spot groups intermediate section. Since this magnetic enhancement and activity escalation, the shear within the delta portion weakened and flare activity diminished. Region 3296 (N16E49; Dai/beta) grew during the period, but remained in a simple bipolar configuration and only low C-class and optical subflares were observed. Region 3297 (N08E64; Dki/beta) rotated fully into view and revealed more areal coverage than could be observed yesterday. Despite the expansive region, it did not appear to be magnetically complex and was only mildly active.
The solar kp index is quiet, with no changes to retrograde effects. The solar wind speed is currently above average, making retrograde effects moderately increased.
The solar wind field was indicative of an elevated, but weakened, solar wind environment. Total IMF strength was primarily 5-6 nT, while the Bz component underwent mainly weak deviations. Solar wind speed measurements at DSCOVR showed decreased speed to about 475 km/s, while ACE measured drops in speed to near 425 km/s. The phi angle was variable between sectors until near 03/0600 UTC, when it became predominantly negative.
There is a 20% chance of solar activity, with a 10% chance of a minor event, a 1% chance of a moderate event, and a 1% chance of a strong event.
